Tips To Match A Shirt and Tie

When it comes to mixing colours some of us have never left our realm of basic dress shirts with grey, crisp white and light blue to venture off to use plaids, stripes, polka dots and micro-checks. Mixing and matching our simple shirt is not problem but once a little pattern gets into the picture then things get a bit complicated for us.

What then do we recommend for you to match your tie and shirt? If you follow the few steps we have outlined below then you will learn how to match perfectly and leave your fear behind.

You must imagine your shirt as a canvas when you decide to use something to match it. Once you see your plain white shirt then you can imagine adding just about anything to your canvas. Bold colours and ties that you have never used before will match perfectly with your white shirt and thus help you to make a statement to your onlookers.

There are some solid shirts that allow matching to be a lot easier. Colours such as: soft blue, light yellow, and light tan can be paired with patterned ties but this is not that easy with unusual colours. The best way to coordinate colours is to pair those that may not be the same but that complement each other aesthetically. Just imagine a light pink shirt being matched with a navy blue tie or better yet a yellow tie with a black shirt.

Patterns

You should not be intimidated by pattern and this is the first rule you will have to bear in mind to be a fashion statement . There is nothing to be afraid of and with time you will be a pro at it. The best approach would be to match pattern on pattern that are different in sizes. You may even take this further by wearing a striped shirt with a thicker diagonal striped tie, and this will take you to our next suggestion!

Striped Shirts

Matching your tie is easy, just look at you shirt and identify the pronounced colour that is on it. This basically involves a little coordinating with colour and a good sense of imagination will help as well for example: for coordinating you could choose a yellow tie with a blue-striped shirt and for pattern tiny polka dots with an even smaller paisley design.

  • If the stripes on your striped shirt and striped tie are not identical then you can wear these without any hesitation.
  • Matching is almost like driving. Try wearing a diagonal tie with a thinner vertically striped shirt.
  • Keep it simple and do not put stripe upon stripe. This means that matching a pinstriped suite with a striped shirt and a striped tie is totally out o the question.

Checkered Shirts

  • If you have checked shirt then try to look for the colour that stands out a lot more and use that as a guide for your tie selection.
  • If you are a micro-check shirt wearer then do not hold back by matching your shirt with a micro-check tie-let your matching skills shine!

Plaid Shirt

  • This is one area that poses a challenge to most men, but even matching a plaid shirt has its secrets as well. The best way would be to match you laid shirt with a solid tie by sing a colour from your shirt that will complement your tie.

Tip: Men who have been on the road of matching ties can try to match checked ties with their plaid shirts.

Colors

There is a great degree of care that has to be exercised when I come to matching colours. You can even match your tie with either you shoes and belt, suit or shirt. If you have never done this before, then just take a deep breath and experiment with understated colours such as : soft blues, chocolate browns, sage greens and rich creams.

Tip: Do not match your suit, shirt and tie with the same pattern. This is because it will not have a harmonious appeal and will be a bit like saying ”look at me everyone”. Do not get bogged down with rules when you are matching your ties, you should relax and have fun and experiment with trying to have to more sophisticated and modern look-this is will allow you to be more flexible for work, dating and weekend. Therefore, say hello to your new wardrobe!
